The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-18 is an intelligent 12V to 12V isolated DC-DC charger delivering 18 amps to a secondary battery bank while the vehicle is running. It is specifically designed for dual-battery setups in 4x4s, camper vans, motorhomes, and boats where a leisure or service battery needs to be charged from the vehicle’s alternator without affecting starter battery voltage.
Galvanic isolation between input and output protects modern vehicle electronics from ground loops and voltage spikes — essential for vehicles with CANbus-managed alternators (Euro 5 and 6 engines). The smart charging algorithm mimics a proper multi-stage charger rather than simply passing alternator voltage through, delivering a full absorption and float cycle to maximise battery life and ensure full charge.
Bluetooth connectivity via VictronConnect gives real-time visibility of input voltage, output voltage, output current, and charge stage. The built-in engine detection waits for the alternator to reach a steady voltage before starting — protecting the starter battery from being discharged by the service bank.
